It looks like an elephant only when it is viewed from the southwest.Happily,Madurai sits to the southwest of Yannai Malai. The Melur road from Madurai runs many miles parallel to the soouth eastern slope of the hill. The Pale brown hue of the hill is enriched by discrete downward streaks of rust-red stains.
The largest muslim enclave in Madurai,not far from the northern bank of Vaigai River. But, if one walked to the right, eastward, one would get into the thick of Goripalayam. Some large and many small, tightly packed dwellings - mostly with shuttered windows - lined the narrow streets and narrower lanes.
